A hearth broke out early Tuesday on the Italian island of Sicily close to Palermo’s airport, forcing it to quickly shut down.
The blaze, which began above the city of Cinisi, reached the sting of the Falcone Borsellino Airport, forcing authorities to halt all air visitors till 11 a.m., the airport announced on social media, as photos from the scene confirmed hovering flames close to the airport perimeter.
Sicily has confronted scorching temperatures, amid a strong warmth wave that has impacted a lot of Southern Europe. On the Italian island, the mercury reached 47.6C on Monday in Catania on the east coast, in accordance to Italian newswire Ansa.
